Uses for Paintable Wallpaper

We are totally sold on the amazing things you can do with paintable wallpaper! It is actually one of the most overlooked types of wallpaper by many people, but it has so many great uses. From re-creating the look of bead board to elegantly covering ceilings, a roll of paintable wallpaper can be applied to much more than walls alone. This amazing wall covering is truly the perfect solution for bringing dimension to flat surfaces throughout your home.

Since this wallpaper has texture and pop, it really hides all those uneven or unsightly spots your wall or ceiling may have. Paintable wallpaper is perfect for hiding outdated paneling, nail holes, and old tough to cover water stains. Styles can range from distinct elegant patterns to textures that look like plaster or fabric.

While you can certainly apply paintable wallpaper anywhere in your home, many people are using it in the kitchen as a backsplash since it is washable, on living room ceilings, and to create interest in the family room or den. Some people even use paintable wallcoverings in the bathroom since they are vinyl and stand up quite well to moisture. With a simple coat of paint, boring walls and ceilings are now filled with depth and actually add a lot of character to your home.

Paintable wallpapers are often used on the ceiling as an alternative to the more expensive and complicated plaster. From a simple look, to the more ornate, paintable wall coverings on the ceiling tend to draw the eye up and give a room the illusion of having higher ceilings and more space. Application is very simple and can be easily done in one afternoon with a 2-person team.

When you are ready to install your new paintable wallpaper you should keep in mind that you must wait roughly 48 hours after hanging the paper up before painting it your desired color. This will help you avoid any issues where the paste has not dried. For best results, and to avoid bubbling or peeling, you should apply a paint primer and use a quality Latex based or Alkyd oil based paint.

The Top 3 Commercial Wall Paper Picks

When it comes to big jobs like covering the walls of doctor’s offices, resort lodgings, fine restaurants, office buildings and other high traffic locations, simple residential style wallpaper just won’t do. Commercial locations require heavy duty wall coverings made to withstand regular contact, temperature changes, the risk of everyday splatters or spills, and even the risk of fading over time. There are also the requirements of flame resistance and weight class that must be met before a contractor can even consider style options for a client.

Due to all of the considerations mentioned above, these three commercial wallpaper choices have been the most sought-after options on the market time after time:

1.       Fabric-Backed Solid Vinyl

Fabric backed vinyl wallpaper is most likely the most popular choice of this top 3 list. The main reasons for this is that this type of commercial wallcovering fits within the Class A Fire Rating standard, comes in Type 1 or Type 2 weight classes, comes in extra wide widths, is easy to keep clean, resists fading, and is easily strippable making future aesthetic changes easy. There is plenty of variety as well making it a contractor’s dream when particularly selective clients are involved.

2.      Multi-Use Textile Wall Covering

Textile wallcoverings are made up of natural and synthetic woven materials. Often made from partially recycled polyester material, this option is also very eco-friendly for environmentally aware companies. Textiles come in multiple colors and can be used in a variety of applications. The textured appearance also lends a great deal of character to an otherwise flat and uninteresting wall.

3.      Paintable Textured Wallpaper

Rather than simply paint a flat wall, paintable wallpaper is being used in many commercial applications to add depth. There are plenty of other benefits as well such as covering uneven walls or patched surfaces, and protecting the wall itself against being easily damaged. The end effect is also quite attractive and professional, an easy way to please clients looking for that subtle extra touch.

In part 1 we took you through the process of planning how to wallpaper. We showed you the tools you will need to get the job done the right way. In part 2 we will continue by tackling the wallpapering job itself. Let’s get started…

Step 3: Prepare Your Space

You will need to move all furniture away from the walls to the center of the room, remove photos from walls, and take down curtains and curtain hardware. If you have anything especially fragile or easily damaged remove it from the room, you need enough space to set up your supplies and pasting table so you can work without too many obstacles in the way. Make sure to cover and protect outlets and light switches.

Professional Tip: Make sure to follow any specific how to wallpaper  instructions that come with your wallpaper paste and the wallpaper itself.

Measuring Wallpaper

Measuring Wallpaper

Step 4: Measure & Mark Your Way

Measure the height of your walls at a few points around the room using the maximum measurement plus an additional 4 inches, you can then trim at the ceiling and baseboard later for the perfect fit. Start at a corner where there are no doors or windows if possible and use a plumb bob to mark a straight line for your first strip. Begin an inch or two less than one roll width away from the corner, make sure to do this for each corner you round.

Step 5: Cutting Wallpaper

Use your stainless steel scissors to cut your first strip of wallpaper. Avoid cutting several strips of paper until you hang the first one, this will allow you to change length if necessary. Once you have the right length it is helpful to cut many to help the work go faster.

Step 6: Pasting Wallpaper

Place the wallpaper back-side up on your pasting table. Add paste evenly from the centre of the paper to the edge of the paper. Make sure not to use too much paste, and also ensure the wallpaper is coated evenly to all edges.

Professional Tip: Make sure to check your specific wallpaper manufacturer’s instructions, they may vary from this method. Some wallpaper requires a soak time, others are pre-pasted and may require no added paste and will use water instead.

Step 7: Hanging Wallpaper

Hanging Wallpaper

Carefully press the pasted wallpaper to the top of the wall, aligning it neatly with your pre-measured line, leave some surplus paper at the top for trimming later. Smooth the wallpaper into position starting at the top and working down using a wallpaper brush to avoid air bubbles. Make sure to watch so your paper lines up with your measurements all the way down.

Step 8: Finish Up

Smooth the wallpaper into the creases between the wall, ceiling, and baseboard as you go, then once finished trim along the creases. Wipe any excess paste from the wallpaper surface, ceiling, and baseboards with damp cloths or a sponge.  When the wallpaper is nearly dry, smooth the seams between strips with a seam roller, do not over-roll since this can cause the paste to be too thin and the edges will lift.

Professional Tip: Use a smoothing brush to tap seams on the following wallpaper types: embossed wallpaper, fabric wallpaper, foil wallpaper, and flocked wallpaper.

Step 9: Troubleshooting Wallpaper Issues

Air Bubbles: A common issue with wallpaper is air bubbles and there is an easy solution, simply make a tiny neat incision, apply paste, and smooth the wallpaper gently back into place with a seam roller.

Paste Bubbles: If paste is added too thickly or gets trapped it can make bubbles just like air. In this case make another tiny incision and squeeze out excess paste, then wipe it clean with a damp cloth.

Uneven Ceiling Line: Often the only way to fix this is with crown molding or by adding a narrow wallpaper border.

Peeling Wallpaper: The most dreaded of issues, often the solution is to re-paste the paper on the edges. If this does not fix your issue you may have to remove the strip, clean the wall, and re-paste the paper. This issue is usually caused by poorly preparing walls, of by not pasting the edges of the wallpaper well-enough.

How To Remove Wallpaper

So you are tired of your old wallpaper, or perhaps you just moved into a home with tacky old wallpaper and you need to get rid of it. How to remove wallpaper? It’s a question that tends to stress-out anyone who needs to tackle this task, but the answer is surprisingly simple, and the process is not as difficult as you might imagine.

Is it Strippable Wallpaper?

Many wallpapers today are the easy strippable kind, so you need to do a test to check what type is on your walls. Pry a seam up on the edge using a utility knife and tug the wallpaper down at an angle, keeping both of your hands close to the edge you are lifting. If the wallpaper peels off in long sheets and does not leave and adhesive residue, your paper is strippable and your project will be super easy. To learn how to remove wallpaper if it is not strippable… keep reading.

Prepare Your Area

You will need to cover floors, furniture and anything valuable you cannot remove from the room with protective plastic drop cloths so these surfaces and items do not get damaged in this process. Shut off all circuit breakers that power the area you will be working in. Removing older wallpaper, or the types of wallpaper that requires adhesive, will take a lot of water, and it will be a very messy job.

Pull Off The Wallpaper Facing

Start near the ceiling at a corner where wallpaper tends to be looser and use a putty knife to lift up the edges of the wallpaper facing. Pull the wallpaper off the wall at an angle using slow, steady pressure. The backing will be left behind, and this is fine since in the next step you will use water to soften and remove it from the wall. The longer a wallpaper has been on a wall, the more difficult it tends to be to remove it, in cases where wallpaper is especially difficult to remove, you may need special tools like a  scoring tool or an electric steamer.

Apply Water and Fabric Softener Or A Chemical Wallpaper Stripper

In this step you may want to wear gloves to protect your hands. You will need to either use one of the commercially available spray-on wallpaper strippers, or you can use warm water and add a cap full of liquid softener per liter of water. Then take a thick sponge or paint roller and apply the solution onto the wallpaper working with water as warm as you can reasonably stand it. If you use water, let it soak for roughly 15 minutes, then scrape the paper from the wall with a putty knife, you may have to repeat this process several times to get all the residue. If you use a spray-on wallpaper stripper, follow the instructions on the bottle.

Patch and Repair Any Wall Damage

After you have removed every bit of the wallpaper, and you have allowed the wall to completely dry (overnight recommended), you can begin the process of prepping the wall for fresh paint, or a new wallpaper… strippable this time! Patch up damage with joint compound and sand the rough patches smooth with a hand sander, making sure to wear a mask to protect against breathing in the dust. If you plan to apply fresh wallpaper, you can use an acrylic primer that is formulated for wallpaper application that makes removing the wallpaper much easier in the future. Wallpaper has recently made a big comeback as people begin to realize just how fashion-forward it really is. There are many uses for modern wallpaper applications that do not necessarily include using it on just a wall. Designer wallpaper is now more detailed than ever with patterns that include vivid colors, metallic accents, soft or rough textures, and 3d shapes. Homeowners and designers alike are using wallpaper to do more than ever before; such as covering a headboard, creating wall art, or even adding a coordinating feature wall design to the insides of bookcases!

Contemporary Wallpaper

Using wallpaper designs is one way homeowners today are creating an environment that is essentially an extension of themselves, a personalized Zen space. Using paint alone, you could not create the visual depth a 3d wallpaper can create. Not that you want to overdo it with wallpapering every inch of every wall in your home; in most cases you would want to be able to add wallpaper as a focal point in the room. Try using your favorite pattern on an accent wall, or use wallpaper to give small spaces the illusion of more space.

Nature Wallpaper
